There are different reasons why people fast. The religious ones fast in accordance with a holy occasion. The diet conscious ones use this as a mode to detox their body for health benefits. Now, there is a third kind that fasts only to lose weight. Unfortunately, health centres confirm that the latter is the most health-damaging. Not only does fasting rudely shun the body from the necessary vitamins and minerals, it lines up a list of health hazards that could last for a long time. While it’s true, the person who is fasting might feel lighter, but they will also experience fatigue and weakness more easily than the times they didn’t fast.

Types of Fasting Plans

Fasting diet plans are of many variations as they are structured to suit different people according to their body types. There are liquid diets where the user strictly consumes all things liquid. So fruit or vegetables juice, milkshake, water, milk, tea, etc. Other diets allow for intake of only those solid foods that have minimal calories. Still other plans claim that it works only if the person strictly fasts every alternate day. Health centres do not encourage such dieting fads.

Health centres have observed and preached how the body is structured as such that it automatically detoxes itself. So, individuals should comprehend that fasting is just a temporary solution to weight loss. Also, the weight lost while fasting is quickly regained by the body that is hungry and craving for a balanced diet. In the bargain of depriving the body, the person might end up consuming more than their usual portions. Upon repeatedly fasting where the intake of food is far less than what the body requires, the body feels perpetually starved. To make up for this sudden lack of energy and essential vitamins, the metabolism decreases rapidly so that the body can stay functional. The body also experiences major internal adjustments which work in diminishing the appetite. Initially the person feels the hunger, but over time when there is no intake of food, the hunger pangs slowly vanish. And then, when the dietary schedule is resumed back to normal, the body quickly grows back its lost appetite, which makes the person to often indulge in consuming more than usual. The effect is similar for those fasting on a daily basis, where they spend hours not eating and then without realising make up for the lost appetite by overeating. So, people do lose weight, but not for long. Among studies conducted on various fasting cycles, one in particular was about this daily habit of fasting. It revealed that the people who were experimented upon, that is those who were subjected to fasting daily, did reduce in weight after a while. Although, not for long as their appetite caught up with them in time causing them to overeat after the fast was concluded.

Is fasting safe?

Weight loss centres say it is okay to fast for a while as there are days when one genuinely doesn’t feel like eating. Like when it is too hot all the body want to consume is liquids like water or juice. Maybe, after an episode of having overeaten when the stomach feels heavy. Or when facing an upset stomach or perhaps during an illness when there is no urge to even consume water. So, fasting for a short duration for an otherwise healthy person is no big deal. When dehydration creeps in along with fatigue, it’s a sign of going overboard. It is wrong to deny the body of vital nutrients in order to look good or fit into that new outfit. People are unaware of the harm they cause themselves by fasting for frivolous reasons. Weight loss centers reveal that people subject themselves to dizziness, constipation, fatigue, dehydration and experience extreme discomfort in staying in a cold place for long. Imagine experiencing the above symptoms on a daily basis! This behaviour is life-threatening, especially if the one who is fasting has pre-existing health problems. For instance, a diabetic person can experience sudden and dangerous swings in blood sugar levels. Pregnant or new mothers who are still breastfeeding will experience immediate fatigue. Or those with serious illness or diseases and are under daily medication will find the effects of the drugs overpowering their system if taken on an empty stomach. Also, children and the aged should have a well-balanced diet.

So before going on a diet that involves fasting, think twice. The diet plan for weight loss should include all the vitamins and proteins that are required for a healthy living. Definitely, approach a health centre as they have dieticians to prescribe healthy diet plans according to individual body types. So, the person can still benefit from all the necessary nutrients in small food portions.
