Elderly Exercises: 5 Workout Tips for Seniors

Growing older may make you lose some mobility, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to exercise. Just 150 minutes of exercise per week will reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, dementia, and depression. If you would like to start exercising but are worried about injuring yourself, then here are a few tips you can use to improve your fitness while staying as safe as possible.

1. Speak With Your Doctor First

Exercising provides seniors with many benefits, but it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. That is why all seniors must first speak with their primary healthcare providers to make sure they are healthy enough to exercise. Certain medical issues might need to be addressed before you can begin your workout routine.

2. Learn Proper Form

Before you try to exert yourself at all, you should first be sure that your form is correct. Everything from the position of your feet to the angle of your back can have a major impact on your safety and well-being. If you are unsure about your form for any movements, then you should speak with a local trainer who has received the proper certifications.

3. Try Low-Impact Exercises

Anyone who has recently hurt themselves or is worried about acute injuries should consider low-impact exercises. Unlike options such as jogging or lifting free weights, a low-impact routine puts very little pressure on your joints and the rest of your musculoskeletal system. Some of the most common low-impact exercises and movements include swimming, walking in the sand, water aerobics, elliptical machines, and stationary bikes.

4. Strength Training Is Still Important

Even if you remain at a healthy weight and regularly enjoy cardiovascular workouts, you might still have weak muscles or a muscle imbalance. Those with aging masters degrees know that when left untreated, those issues can result in spinal problems, chronic pain, and damaged joints. Lifting machines are an excellent middle ground for anyone who is not quite ready to tackle free weights. These machines offer the same resistance, but they are much more stable.

5. Don’t Forget to Fuel Yourself

Many people forget that their diet is one of the most important components of their fitness. No matter how much time you spend exercising, a bad diet could undo all of your hard work. Once you begin to exercise more, your body will need more calories to continue operating. A healthy diet should focus on fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, lean protein sources, and whole grains.

Exercising becomes much more important as you grow older, but you must make sure your workouts are safe and practical at all times to prevent serious injuries. With the right workout, you’ll be much happier and healthier in your golden years.
